Shopian Police Seize ₹29,000 in Gambling Raid Near Sugan Orchards
Shopian Police arrested three men caught gambling during a routine patrol near Sugan Orchards under Police Post Turkwangam on April 9. Officers recovered ₹29,000 in stake money and a deck of playing cards from the site. This operation highlights intensified local efforts to eradicate gambling as a persistent social ill in the region.
Identities of the Detained
The suspects include Bashir Ahmad Ganie, son of Gh Mohammad Ganie from Pulwama; Nisar Ahmad Seh, son of Gh Mohammad Seh from Achan Pulwama; and Hilal Ahmad Ahanger, son of Gh Qadir Ahanger from Malikpora Pulwama. All three residents hail from neighboring Pulwama district, pointing to cross-district networks in such activities. One associate, Bilal Ahmad Sheikh from Tresal Pulwama, escaped before police could apprehend him.
Operation and Evidence Recovery
Patrolling officers spotted the group engaged in gambling and moved in swiftly. The ₹29,000 cash represented wagers at stake, while the playing cards served as tools of the prohibited game. Such spots in orchards offer seclusion, yet routine checks expose them, demonstrating effective policing tactics in rural Jammu and Kashmir.
Legal Measures and Investigation
Police registered FIR No. 49/2026 under Section 13 of the Gambling Act at Zainapora Police Station. This section targets those found gaming in public places, carrying penalties including fines and imprisonment to deter recurrence. Investigation proceeds to trace links and recover the fugitive, aiming to dismantle any wider involvement.
Push Against Social Vices
Gambling undermines family stability and fuels petty crime in conservative communities like Shopian, where police prioritize public order amid broader challenges. Authorities reaffirm dedication to curbing illegal acts through vigilant patrols. Residents receive calls to report suspicions, fostering community-police partnership for safer locales.
